Hiking and Jogging Trails
In the Spring, Summer and Fall, hikers and joggers will enjoy
the moderately challenging terrain as they take in the peaceful
natural surroundings of Stoney Island. Keep your eyes open for
the unique flora and fauna of this area. Various trees are labeled
as to their species.
Stoney Island has sheltered wide trails through cedar and hardwood
bush. These trails are track set and maintained by the Kincardine
Cross Country Ski Club, therefore, no walking or dogs on the ski
trails during ski season is permitted.
Mountain Biking
This area is an excellent site for mountain bike enthusiasts
to develop their skills. The trails offer many challenging features
such as moguls, combination ridge climbs, straight-aways, hill
climbs, curved and banked downhill runs, trial diversions, racing
circuits, rough terrain and bridge crossings.
You may wish to contact the Kincardine Cycling Club at (519)396-7550
for event information.
Cross Country Skiing
The trail system at Stoney Island Conservation Area was developed
and is maintained by the Kincardine Cross Country Ski Club. These
wide trails are sheltered by hardwoods, cedars and hemlocks. They
are regularly groomed and are suitable for both skating and classical
(traditional) skiing. Skiers with racing and sport skiing ambitions
as well as touring skiers or wilderness lovers will find trails
suited to their abilities.
There is a choice of 1.5, 3, and 5 km loops ranging from beginner
to expert. All loops, except the beginners loop, contain
sharp uphill or downhill runs.
In total there are 8 kms of trails throughout the scenic woods,
over challenging ridges and meandering creeks and alongside the
bluffs which overlook the beautiful Lake Huron shoreline.
On Saturdays and Sundays and on most weekdays in the evening
relax and enjoy the heated ski hut before or after your skiing
adventure. Parking is available at the east entrance.
The ski club offers a Jackrabbit ski program for
kids as well as a Racing Rabbits program for graduating
Jackrabbits who want to continue with more serious skiing. The
Racing Rabbits program focuses on competitive skiing with year
round training and travel to out-of-town competitions. Also, bi-weekly
club time trials and the Bruce Junior Championships are run on
these trails.
Club members have free access to the trails and non-members are
asked to pay a nominal trail fee at the ski hut. Groups may use
the facility free of charge for prearranged ski outings. For further
information please contact the Ski Club at (519)396-7383 or www.angelfire.com/co/kccsc/
Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing fans will find a trail system developed solely for
snowshoeing navigation. This trail meanders through sheltered
areas of hardwoods, cedars and hemlocks and leads to the bluff
with its beautiful view of Lake Huron.
