Firewood can often contain insects and plant diseases. Campers who bring firewood from home may accidentally spread those diseases that threaten Ontario's parks and the health of our forests.
Firewood is one of the easiest ways for the insects to travel. Dormant insects or eggs can be moved via firewood from infested trees.
The Emerald Ash Borer, for example, an aggressive introduced species thought to be brought in via firewood, has already been identified in this area. Without natural controls in Canada, the effects of these insects are often devasting to the natural environment.
Staff at the campgrounds in the SVCA Conservation Areas will be asking if you are bringing in any firewood. Please help us by utilizing the firewood designated for the park. We realize this may be an inconvenience, however it is necessary for the protection of our living forests and support of our local ecosystem.
